LARIS TO REPRESENT
OKLAHOMA IN
NATIONAL BOWLING EVENT
(April 16,
2008) – Nick Laris, a Tulsa junior at Metro Christian High
School, won first place in the boys handicap
division of the Oklahoma State Pepsi Youth USBC Bowling Tournament. Laris rolled 1294 for six games and
received 178 pins handicap based on his entering average of 167. Laris, age 17, received a $500
scholarship and entry into the Pepsi USBC Youth Championships which will be held
July 14-16 in Detroit,
MI. Pepsi, the official soft drink of
bowling and the United States Bowling Congress sponsor this annual event which
is held in a different city each year.
The top finishers in each division(boys and girls) in each state receive
entries to the national finals. The
state tournament also has a scratch division for boys and girls, offering
scholarship money and entries in the Junior Olympic Gold finals which qualify
the top bowlers for Team USA.
Laris, the son
of Steve and Paula Laris, averaged 215 for his six games. He started bowling at age 5 but gave it
up for a number of years in order to participate in school sports. Laris went back to bowling seriously
about a year ago and has been working hard at Andy B's Riverlanes to improve his
game. “I would never be in this
position,” said Laris, “if it wasn’t for Chuck West(Youth Director at
Andy B's Riverlanes) and Tonya Bennett(pro shop manager for Extreme Bowling). They’ve prepared me physically and
taught me more about the game than I could have ever learned on my own. I owe my success to them.”
Other entries from the Tulsa area also achieved
some success in the tournament.
